VERMONTERS GONE WILD! Pond skimming season is upon us, promising tons of fun for the whole family

Jan 16, 2025 02:18PM ● By EMILY PARKER
As spring approaches, ski enthusiasts and fun seekers alike are gearing up for one of the most entertaining traditions of the season: pond skimming.

This lighthearted competition sees skiers and snowboarders donning outrageous costumes as they attempt to glide across a man-made pond without sinking. Vermont’s top ski resorts—Sugarbush Killington Resort , and Smugglers' Notch —are hosting their annual pond skimming events this April, promising a day full of fun, laughter, and memorable moments.

WHAT IS POND SKIMMING?

Pond skimming is a spring skiing tradition that combines humor, creativity, and skill. Participants attempt to ski or snowboard across a pond, often resulting in epic splashes for those who don’t make it across.

Spectators play a big role in the fun, cheering for participants and enjoying the creative costumes and amusing wipeouts. Many resorts turn their pond skimming events into full-day festivals, with live music, food, and additional contests.

TIPS FOR PARTICIPANTS

If you plan to participate, keep these tips in mind:

Dress Creatively: Costumes are a key part of the fun. The more elaborate, the better! Consider themes that are humorous or unexpected but still allow for movement.

Sign Up Early: Participation is limited, so register as soon as the event details are announced.

Be Prepared: While the goal is to skim across the pond, many participants take an icy dip. Bring a change of clothes and a towel, just in case.

Follow the Rules: Ensure you understand and follow the resort’s safety guidelines.

TIPS FOR SPECTATORS

Watching is just as fun as participating. Get the most out of your experience with these tips.

Arrive Early: Good viewing spots can fill up quickly, so plan to get there before the event starts.
Stay Comfortable: Dress in layers to stay warm in Vermont’s unpredictable spring weather.

Bring Snacks: While resorts often have food and beverage vendors, packing your own can save time.

Capture the Moment: Don’t forget your camera—these events are filled with photo-worthy moments.

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

Pond skimming is more than just a ski tradition—it’s a celebration of the change from winter to spring. It’s a chance to laugh, enjoy creative costumes, and see some impressive (and often hilarious) performances. Whether you’re a participant or a spectator, these events promise memories you’ll cherish.
